How much more space do you need to complete the upgrade?  You *might* be 
able to move the current uncompressed kernel (typically 
vmlinux-[kernel-version]) elsewhere for the moment along with any other old 
kernel versions still in /boot.  Just remember to leave the working version 
that you booted from.  Don't know if this would free up enough space or not.

For reasons of my own, I typically make /boot ( or just / if there's no 
/boot) around 150 - 200Mb.  Disk drives are pretty inexpensive these days 
and if you're that tight on space it's time to think about buying another 
disk drive.
