Software RAID is part of the 2.2.x kernel series and can be loaded as a 
module or compiled into the kernel.  Although your mirrors can be located 
on drives of different sizes & types, keep in mind the RAID array will only 
be as large as the smallest drive or partition (assuming RAID-1).  I 
*think* all drives/partitions must be the same size for RAID-5, but I'm not 
sure.

Which filesystems/directories are you planning on mirroring?  Mirroring 
user data is pretty straightforward, trying to mirror any of the system 
directories can be a bit trickier, depending on which ones you want to mirror.

One other caveat - AFAIK, there's not way to non-destructively create a 
software RAID array, so you'll need to backup the data, create the RAID 
array and restore the data.
