Offhand, I'd say it's because someone knows that logging in to the root
account over an unencrypted connection is a REALLY BAD THING :)
I suggest that you set up root's mail to forword to a different user, and
check mail there.
I also suggest that you set up an SSL proxy like "jonama" and stop using
unencrypted connections entirely.
