Rob,

Right at the console type telnet yourhostname.

Your hostname being whatevery your machine name is. Then
not how it asks for user and password. If you want to be root
then type su and hit enter and it will prompt you for roots password.
If your in X then do the same with a terminal window.
You can telnet to any machine that allows you access to it.
