There were some slight incompatibilities between the early 2.0x 
samba and the smbfs stuff in the kernel at the time (required for 
the client side) but that's been resolved AFAIK.  The current man 
page for smbmount should actually be correct now too (it was hosed 
for a while, and described old/unsupported syntax).

If you're running a current (2.2.14 ->) kernel and samba 2.0.5 or 
better, it *should* work correctly.  The botched upgrade I 
mentioned previously hosed up my smb support (among other things) 
so I could no longer mount a samba share (1.9.18p10) from an older 
linux box.  Once I re-installed RH 6.2 from scratch, everything 
worked fine again.
