Rob,

I've been told this and seen this repeatedly, and while what the
Guru's are
saying IS true, it's also completely wrong.... because they leave off a
word, or
folks don't hear the word....

Rewrite your above statement as 'there is "no way" it will ever work in
Linux
natively' and I would agree. But there are options. You could, for
example,
install VMware on the machine, setup a windows virtual machine running on
your
Linux box, and install the printer to the virtual machine. You can turn on
the internal (in the box) "networking" for the virtual machine, and set the
virtual machine to share the printer. From there, you set up Linux to use
the
printer as a remote printer with a Windows server, a normal option. For
folks with WinModems, you can do something similar with Internet Connection
Sharing in Windows98SE to allow a Linux machine to use a WinModem....
Oh, and if you want to enable the printer or Modem for NETWORK use, just
change the network option for the box, or enable IP forwarding from the
"virtual" to the real network on the Linux box, and vice versa.

It's not the BEST solution, perhaps (VMware isn't cheap, and to get this to
work
will require a decent amount of RAM and HD space lost to the guest OS!) but
it
is A solution to your problem. It is probably even cheaper (if you are only
faced with ONE of these dilemmas) to throw out the hardware and buy Linux
compatible equipment, if you have no other need or desire to have Windows on
the system. But it is A solution.
