I have run into a similar modprobe problem with the same error messages
you are receiving in /var/log/messages. The fix to this was doing the
following:
To your /etc/conf.modules add these lines:
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
Hopefully this will stop the compression problems and give a you
a stable login without interruption of packet transfer.
