You have to be root for this to work - a normal user doesn't have write
permission to the required directories.

You might want to read and follow the instructions in README.linux.
You might also want to get cdrecord-1.9
 
If you would like a source RPM of 1.9, let me know, and I will send you
one.  (I would send you a compiled one, but my development machine has
libsafe installed, so any rpms I build also require it...)
