I have re-installed this test system using /boot as a RAID device, and do
not get the previously mentioned [FAILED] message on halts/restarts. The
only thing that I have done differently is allowed the mirror to completely
initialize at the conclusion of the RedHat installation, before clicking
the button to restart. So, my guess would be that not fully initializing
the mirrors before restarting was the cause of the [FAILED] message.
After upgrading the kernel (now successful from source) I am running /boot
as a RAID device with no problems.
Also, I do not encounter those silly /var/log/dmesg messages any more that
I complained about initially.
