>From what I've seen, the X gvim package doesn't get installed with
RedHat, unless you do an "everything" install or explicitly install
the rpm package. Yes, gvim is pretty cool, but so is Xemacs (and
even regular emacs). If you need integration with CVS and other
linux tools, and the ability to write your own extensions (such as
the ada-mode package for emacs), then emacs is probably what you
want. I also started with vi, and I use it all the time for system
chores and other minimal editing duties, mostly from the shell
prompt. However, I finally started to bite the bullet last
semester and start using emacs (both Xemacs and GNU-emacs) for
writing code, and I must say they are totally cool too. The only
hitch is all that Lisp stuff in your .emacs file. I stole some
stuff from some other people, but I can't say I understand it all.
And no, I don't see getting a woody over a nice piece of software
as any different than other guys getting one over a new power tool.
As long as you still get one for your wife too, then I think
you're okay ;)

PS. Want to know what's *really* cool? The latest Enlightenment
code from their CVS repository. See:
http://www.enlightenment.org
It's too bad RedHat lags so far behind the current code...
