try it with fetchmail -v -v
(really verbose) it may get you a little closer

I had problems with  message that had a period in a line all by itself that caused
fetchmail to puke.  I believe a period on a line by itself is what smtp sees as
the end of the message.  I had to manaully delete the message with a mail reader
other than fetchmail.  Then everything was cool.
