If I understand correctly, this Motorola modem is your cable modem? If so, no
you can't plug it straight into a hub, since your whole lan will be talking to
the modem, and your provider probably wont like that (, unless you have a
bunch of reserved IP adresses of course, in which case you need a patched
cable anyway, since your cable modem is "crossed" (you normally plug it
straight into an ethernet device (with a non crossed cable afaik))).
If you only use the cable modem for this single machine, you plug it in to
eth0, and setup your chains. If you want to connect your lan you need to setup
a router/masquerader, so you need an extra nic. In that case, where you used
to use ppp0 you now use eth1 as the external device. For details see the
