true type fonts in java

Possibly way off topic but does any one know if I can use
true type fonts in the 1.1.8 JDK from IBM?  If so, how ?
I am lost in a morass of font.properties file syntax and
don't truly undstand how all lthe font stuff works anyway in
X but I think I am getting closer.  I do have the truetype
fonts working under X thanks to this list's archives.
