The point is being missed here, and its THE big thing, it has nothing to do
with Linux or its support etc
Win modems plainly do not do the same job as a proper modem, no matter how
many cycles, CPU's, choice of OS etc you have or can spare.
I would have to say it would be bad advice to tell a newbie to go out and
buy a win modem, even if he uses windows...... period, if you already have
one, thats a different kettle of fish.
I also believe that no one on the list is telling anyone who has one of
these modems working sucessfully to change to anything else, why would we
do that?
Another thought is, its very possible for the CPU to reach 100% for various
reasons for small periods of time, I wonder if the modem will get the
attention it needs, or will it drop the carrier ?
I have to concede to another thing.......at least with a win modem there is
less chance of damage from a lightning strike due to next to no components
being inside :-))
Rest assured everybody, I am not against you having or using any
hardware/OS etc, I point my advice to newbies who would not know how to add
a string etc etc
