I have my new machine, running Redhat 6.2 under Linux version
2.2.14-5.0.14b, set up to automatically dial out via ppp
whenever I start up my computer. It's through an internal 56k modem.
The dialout is done through a cron job. I've noticed occasionally when I
turn on the machine that when the ppp chat script is invoked, instead of
the modem dialing I get the following error:

Jun 29 00:02:01 va chat[903]: Can't get terminal parameters: Input/output
error

and the modem does not dial out.

Since my cron is set to try to log on every minute, this happens
repeatedly. I've noticed in the log files that this has happened before --
I leave my machine on a lot without me being there -- but apparently the
modem would eventually dial, after many tries.

If I am around and get impatient and shut the machine down and off and
restart it, craving my Redhat mailing list :), the next time the machine
boots up, sure enough, the modem starts dialing as it should, right away.

FYI, whenever the modem does dial, I get the following note in the
/var/log/messages file:

Jun 25 06:06:00 va kernel: Use of setserial/setrocket to set SPD_* flags
is deprecated.

Can you help me figure out what is going wrong here and how to correct it?

Any help appreciated.

Gary
