Ripping or encoding mp3's from CD consistently locks up my Linux
system. Whenever using the RipperX app (frontend for ripper/encoder
apps), or when using a bladeenc, lame, or cdparanoia app alone from the
command line, in X or straight from console without X running, the
entire system freezes. Usually the ripping and/or encoding process will
get halfway done, and then lock the system. I run Mandrake6.0, and this
behaviour happened when I was running Redhat5.0 and 5.1 before also. I
have a 450mhz processor with 128mb ram and many gigs left of file space,
and often run *many* apps at once without a problem. When I tried
ripping and encoding, I shutdown all other programs like netscape,
staroffice, etc. I've tried ripping and encoding in one combined
process, and also have done it separately. I don't understand how my
entire linux system can be brought to its knees by a simple execution of
a program - I thought programs and system run in separate paths so to
speak. My system *very* rarely crashes otherwise; sometimes Netscape
hangs and occasionally my AcceleratedX display server locks, but the
basic linux system goes on unfettered. This is puzzling!

Help/Thanks!

Chip.
