I have recently changed an ATI Xpert '98 for a Diamond Stealth III S540 and the improvement in text character clarity is marvelous on my 21 inch display, an OEM'd Viewsonic; XFree86 calls it a "Tek152e". However, many or most photographs look dark. With the ATI and the XF86_Mach64 server (3.3.6), I could partly compensate by setting gamma to 2.2, but the XF86_SVGA server does not seem to recognize gamma settings when used withe the S540. Given the popularity of this card, I wondered whether anyone has an improved X server for it. Non-free versions are fine, too, since they'd likely be lots cheaper than buying a new monitor!
