Also, you may not have access to the smtp server that you are sending
through. Check that the mail relay on the smtp box is open, and if not, add
your ip to /etc/mail/relay-domains. If you don't own the server, try
another smtp server to see if that is even the problem. You'll need to
restart sendmail after this to rebuild the db. This is probably a long shot,
but I see it all the time with what I do.

Which name does the MX record have, the actual name, or the CNAME?

Well, what MTA are you using? sendmail, qmail, postfix, or something else?
Check your /var/log/maillog for the exact error and please list it here.
