I belive apropos uses the whatis database that is created/ updated via a
daily cron job. If you don't leave you machine on and running Linux the
cron job is not run. On my system /etc/cron.daily/makewhatis.cron runs
makewhatis -u -w .
I would run the cron script and then try the man -k.
