Through, or by? I guess in this case the connection is made to and answered
by the firewall?

I recently had this ident problem as well, in my case when reading
newsgroups. Just allowing connections to port 113 was all I had to do. In this
case instead of dropping all the rules on the firewall it seems you have to
add one. If you only need to reply the ident for the FTP uploads you can set
just one source address.
