BSD installations traditionally had user accounts under /u, and V.4
installations used /home. Use of /usr/people and the like predates the
BSD/V.4 schism, IIRC.
The Linux filesystem standard has elements of V.4 (/var, /sbin) and BSD
(/bin, /lib in addition to /usr/bin, /usr/lib). It's its own thing.
