Hi,
I mostly talk with linux machines and use kermit to interact with my win98
machines so I don't know that I can help much. However a while back
I had trouble with a 6.2 machine not starting the network services and
couldn't figure out why ping failed with a similar message. I had
change  /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 so it read
ONBOOT=yes
Have you read your messages log to see if the driver and services are
turning on here are some of the lines from mine
