Yeah, the VA-partitioning is a little strange; of course you can pay $50(?)
extra for "custom partitioning." What we (I) do is repartition (swap, small
/boot, 6GB /, rest /home-$HOST), reinstall and add local customizations.
Moving stuff, and symlinking works fine as well, but it feels "wrong" to
do this on a brand spanking new system...

apmd is trying to find out how much charge remains in your battery, but
since a desktop does not have one the result is "unknown." On a laptop
you would get a more informative message.
