Oh shit, I have been unclear. I meant 'ln -s ../init.d/firewall S40ipchains'
The 'ln -s' part is fine. The entry in the DIRECTORY must have a capital
'S'. I read somewhere recently that one way to disable a service (so it
doesn't start) without removing the symbolic link (e.g., because it is
temporarily) is to change the capital 'S' to lowercase in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d .
