FTP & File Permissions

Greetings all - I have a question:   I have users configured as FTP users only, so they cannot leave their home directories in FTP.  So now I'm left with this bizarre phenomena:  when logged in via FTP, the DIR command returns nothing.  The LS command returns everything. Unfortunately, all the FTP programs I've tested use DIR, thus not displaying any files.  Files can be deleted, renamed, uploaded, anything - just not seen.   Can anyone help me w/ this?  I'm pretty sure it has something to do w/ permissions, ownership, and/or grouping - but obviously, I'm at a loss here.   Thanks!!   Joel
