A couple of things to try - instead of using /dev/modem in Kpp, use
/dev/ttyS0 for the external modem, and /dev/ttyS1 or /dev/ttyS2 for the PC
card modems. If the 25CDT is like my 400CDT, the PC card modem will be
/dev/ttyS2 if you have the IR port enabled.
The problem with creating the link to /dev/modem is because you already
have the link. If you want to create a new link, you have to delete the
old one first. If you do ls -al /dev/modem it will tell you what the
current link is.
A good way to see if the modem is working is to try accessing it from
minicom. This will let you make sure you have the correct port, and that
you can realy talk to the modem. Then you can work on your problems with
Kppp.
