If you are looking at one of the better know brands (IBM, Compaq, Toshiba...) you can 
probably find entire pages devoted entirely to Linux on that machine.  However if you 
have your eye on something a little less know and can't find a good page on it, 
consider looking at the components and doing a little research.   If you want to run X 
check the video card in the machine and make sure that it is supported.   Personally 
mine wasn't(and I almost cried) but I found a fix on the web.   Same goes for the 
modem... if that is important to you... You probably won't get a "true" modem but look 
on www.linmodems.org and see if you can get a modem that "might" have some support 
already... or coming in the near future.  Likewise for the soundcard, yada yada 
yada....
