to simplify things, i'm going to install 6.2 on my dell inspiron
7500 (with the internal CD-RW) in the next day or so, start with
the stock kernel, and slowly reconfigure until i can use the CD-RW.
then i'll post the minimal tweaking/kernel config i had to do to
get it to work.

yes, i did recompile the kernel based on the CD-Writing Howto, but i
also distinctly recall not having to do everything that had been
described as essential.  i'll keep you posted.
