Linda,
        Check e2fsck.  It will do the same type of tests as Scandisk does.
What you probably want is the bad block test. (-c)  If you are going to
run it, you really should be in the single user mode, with the file system
mounted read only.  You can also run badblocks directly, but be careful
of the options you pick - it can be used to erase data.
        To do a better test of the drive, you should get the diagnostic
program from the manufacturer for the drive.  They have tests that will
test the electronics, as well as the drive surface.  I know the Western
Digital software will generate a report and a code needed to get a RMA
to exchange the drive...
