i just installed, yesterday, 6.2 on a box at work with a 3c509B-TPO
card. The network did not come up automatically. I have not yet
fully diagnosed the problem, but I see that upon boot it fails to
insmod the driver. It says something like:

        loading /lib/modules/<stuff>/eth0

and note that there is no module named eth0. If I manually insmod
the 3c509.o module then run:

        /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start

the network comes up.

I hope to diagnose what it is doing wrong today... I'm guessing it has
somehow screwed up, or misinterpreted, the contents of /etc/conf.modules.

One thing you should do, though, if you haven't yet, is to boot up a DOS
diskette and run the 3c5x9cfg.exe utility (you can get it from www.3com.com
if you don't have it) to turn OFF the plug'n'pray nonsense and set the
card "hardwired" to suitable address and IRQ.

Good luck!

Fred
