Did you by any chance do an upgrade to 6.2? If so, you need to
edit /etc/inetd.conf and comment out the line: (all one line)
auth stream tcp nowait nobody
/usr/sbin/in.identd in.identd -l -e -o
In 6.2 initd is a stand alone daemon instead of being started
by inetd.
