Hi,

This is long, but please help me someone. I'm 100% stumped.

I have an old 486 sitting around and I wanted to use it for some logging
purposes, but I can't get it going.

The 486 has a 3Com Elink III ISA card. I've setup the card to run on the
RJ-45 twisted pair port. (And verified. At least 20 times. :-)

I have a Linksys Autosensing 10/100 hub.

I connect the card with a known good Cat. 5 cable to the hub. (Any port
except the uplink port.)

I turn on the hub. (Power is lit on the hub.)

I turn on the PC. The 10Mb led on the hub for the connected port does
*not* light up. (Shouldn't it?)

I boot from the bootnet.img and starts an ftp installation. I give the
card name (Elink III). I do not give any parameters for the card. (I've
tried that too. Didn't make any difference.) Still no sign of life on
the hub.

I give IP address etc.

A message box says: "Determining host name and domain..." and the led on
the hub goes on!!!

>From this point, I can do a full ftp installation.

When the installation is finished, I reboot the PC to fire up the
system. The led on the hub is still lit up. But the startup of eth0
fails. Message: "Delaying eth0 initialization".

In /var/log/boot.log I find the messages:

network: setting network parameters succeeded
ifup: SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
network: Bringing up interface lo succeeded
ifup: Delaying eth0 initialization
network: Bringing up interface eth0 failed

I can't find any other related messages anywhere.

So, I do a shutdown and I turn off the power of the PC.

I turn it on again and Linux is launched. But during the full boot
process, the led on the hub remains black and once more I have the same
error messages as above. From this point I'm unable to get the led on
the hub to light up, whatever I do.

Except: If I launch a new installation, the led will light up and I can
re-install. Iteration! Goto beginning of story.

The above is true for three different Elink III cards that I've tried in
two different PCs.

I strongly believe that I've tried *all* combinations of I/O address /
IRQ level on all three cards. The two PCs doesn't contain 'anything
else'. (Of course, there is a VGA card and an IDE interface. But that's
all.

Questions:
- Shouldn't the led on the hub light up when I turn power on in the PC?
(The 100Mb cards from 3Com does this.)
- There is a led on the MAC. I read somewhere that this led should
blink. It's always lit up with a steady light. Even during the full
working ftp installation. How should it behave?
- What does the installation routine do to get the card running and why
isn't the same thing done when the system boots up?

And most importantly:
- What can I do to make this work?

Thanks for reading this far.
Any tips/hints/ideas *very* much appreciated. (I'd even appreciate a "Me
too" message. :-)

Regards
Gustav
