One alternative to this is that he could also go to the web site for the
drive manufacturer. I know that Western Digital, Maxtor, and Seagate all
have "Drive Diagnostics" tools. Download the appropriate one, and run
the complete battery of tests on the drive. The Write tests are always
destructive (they have to be) and give you back a nice slick drive. Added
bonus: You've also just tested the drive as thoroughly as possible for
any errors or problems, and you've just "reset" the drive (the equivalent
of low level reformatting) after finishing these tests. That should add
to the drives lifespan. In all probability, he's using an older, 2-3 year
old HD, so these tests can be a big help. And the added bonus of slicking
the drive means that he shouldn't have any problems at that point getting
it ready for whatever operating system/file format he wants to put on it.

Hello

Yeah I had this problem before. Not being able to Delete Linux partitions
with
fdisk. Here is how I reinstalled NT WK 4.0 over Linux :-

Fdisk will not delete your Linux partition (they still haven't bothered
fixing
it yet)

You need to use NT installation partition utility to delete Linux partitions

You place the NT Boottable CD in your CDROM then run the NT WK installation
utitlty this should prompt you for hd then it should prompt you for NTFS
partioning . At this stage you should be able to delete all your partitions
created in LInux that Fdisk cannot delete

Then you must run Fdisk again and restore your "Master Boot Recrod"
otherwise
known as your MBR. Type in the following command in dos prompt "fdisk /mbr"
now
you can install Windows NT WK 4.0 or Windows 95.

Looking forward to your feedback.
