Thomas, when you reinstall with 6.2 you will be given the option to 
select
which partitions should be formatted.  By default, /home is not 
formatted,
as retaining it from one installation to another is quite common.  Just 
look for the screen where you select which partitions to format during 
the
install and leave those you do not want touched left unchecked.
