Hi,
someone passed on a 486 with a single
disk of 600 MB and 8 MB RAM, running Win3.11. i don't have the password to the
BIOS, and did not bother trying to get in by discharging the battery, resetting
a jumper, or hacking it
i took the disk out some time back, plugged it in
as a primary slave on another machine and deleted the partition. i then created
two DOS partitions. i put all RedHat 6.0 Base and RPMS and all the other
installable stuff into 300 MB of hard disk, and had the other partition
empty
i then went home, put this disk back in and booted
from a RedHat boot floppy that i had created using rawrite
earlier.
it booted wonderfully, and went into install, after
asking me the preliminary questions about keyboards and stuff, and where the
RedHat directory was located, it said:
' Loading second stage ramdisk'
a little bit of disk activity and then the same screen, nothing showed on the other virtual
consoles.
What's wrong?
i then searched around the installable directory
and found a file called 2ndstage.ram or something similar, and i thought that
its corrupted. So i copied it afresh from a CD-ROM, but no luck
now, i have rebooted so many times trying to get it
to run, that occassionaly it says something like "Hard disk controller
trashed"
hints and tips please on how to do this right,
especially since i now have a PIII 550 with 64 MB RAM and a 10 GB at home, how i
would love to run Linux on both, run a cross-cable between them and get double
the thrills
thanks and bye,
krishnan
