[RH6.1 - all updated as of 3 weeks ago, with gnome]

root logged in, running gnome/E
user logged in, running gnome/sawmill

I had an gnome/X lockup, but I could get a new vc and log root in again.
After looking over a few things, I decide to reboot. 'root' issues:

   'shutdown -h now'

system shutting down message appears...
'root' gets a new a new bash prompt...
nothing happened.

repeat process on 2 other vc's... same results, no shutdown.

Is there anyway to force a proper shutdown at this point?

-----
Additionally, I tried to kill all processes for user 'foo' (owner of
original gnome/X lockup):

 ps aux | grep foo | awk '{print $2}' | kill

and

 ps aux | grep foo | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill

but no go.

What's the best way to "logout" a user and/or kill all of his processes?

Thank you.
