Hello.
The database is not built by default.- cron is responsible to do that but
usually you turn off the machine before that happens (home enviroments)
try to do this:

$ls /etc/cron.daily

you'll see the scripts run by cron each day where it shoud appear:

makewhatis.com.

I use to run that script once at my home when I install a RH distro.
