Well, I got it sorted. The first reply re adding the IP of the 'real hostname'
to /etc/hosts didn't work in my case... what you have to
do is configure it so that the hostname does not become the DHCP assigned IP
address. This is a checkbox in Kppp set-up.
Another way is to fire up a console and enter 'xhost +localhost' prior to
dialing in. Obviously it is a configuration in a script
somewhere? Where is the ppp (UID password, # to dial etc.) script?

Pass this info on.
