The GE force 256 has a lot of potential, but currently there is no
support for 3D on the card under linux. I'd recommend the Voodoo 3 or
the G400. I can get 50 FPS in Quake3 @640x480 /w default settings using
XFree86 3.3.6 and utah-glx on my G400. (This is beats the windows
drivers on the same machine, but past 1024@768 the windows drivers beat
glx.) It requires a little tweaking, a new kernel to support agp, and
you need to run as root to get direct rendering. If anyone's interested
I can provide a kernel rpm, glx rpm, and glx.conf file that should work
for G400's and G200s.
The VIII has a slightly easier setup, however and gets better 3D
performance. The VIII will also have useable 3D support in 4.0 sooner.
The G400 is a much more well rounded card, and has much better 2D
support in both 3.3.6 and 4.0. Keep in mind my VIII knowledge is mostly
2nd hand, and based on setting up my old VII.
It really depends on wether you are willing to wait for NVIDA's
driver. I'd hazard a guess it will beat the VIII, and G400 under
linux. I'd say more, but then I'd have to kill both of us.
Another place to watch in the future is ATI. They're not at the high
end, but I know a number of people that have gotten utah-glx working on
an ATI card.(including laptops) ATI's getting fairly aggressive about
linux support.

120 fps is not very impressive for the gears demo, but it's impresive
that this without hardware acceleration.
