apache modules

I have a basic question.
when you install modules
i guess called mod_alias.c

how would you do that into apache.
i see it in the httpd.conf
and it does this
AddModule mod_alias.c

but if someone makes it how would
you include it into apache.
do you need to recompile it into apache too?
or just copy a file into a certain directory?

Also, what does the module allows apache
to do so great?
