Has anyone out there loaded Linux onto a system with a motherboard based
on the intel 820 or 840 chipset? Have reliable word from a friend who
builds systems for a living that slot 1 CPU's are going to be getting
very hard to get; intel is quietly phasing out production of them in
favor of the PPGA packaging.
The problem here is that most of the new motherboards with the PPGA
sockets for PII/PIII chipsets are based on the 820 or 840 chipset. I've
been unable to get any answer to the question of "will Linux run on an
820/840 based motherboard."
Note: this is _not_ the same as the 810 chipset with it's integrated
audio & video.
I'm preparing to drop about US $1100.00 for a motherboard (dual/scsi)
and 2 PIII/600MHz for a customer. I'm reluctant to take a chance on
eating the cost and not delivering because of chipset problems.
best & thanks,
rickf
