I had a similar problem with a soundblaster card. Here was a suggestion from Brian Thacker that worked for my system: When you configure the kernel, make sure to include the FM-Synth (YM3812/OPL-3) support module and in the additional low level sound drivers, be sure to include AWE32 synth support and see if that helps.
