I suppose you don't happen to have some old 386 lying around which you
could set up as a terminal (or network to your main machine)? That way,
you'd always be able to remotely log in and kill the offending
process(es). However, unless you're interested in setting up a network
anyway, it's probably a bit much, I admit.
