X questions

I am getting use to Gnome and have a few problems / questions. this is a 
new 6.1 install and I am always logging in as root.

On Gnome Desktop
I have lost the 4 screen / desktop selector icon that was on the 
bottom  Start bar...how do I get it back.
For some reason all my windows open in the top right hand corner and I 
can't access the title bar to move the window so I can use it. When I try 
to use the File...move  menu I get this response
Can't operate on "!"
How do I fix this ?

I want to run in Window Maker. I select and load it...then set a few things 
up. Then Save settings but I have to keep redoing this when I log out and 
back in . How am I suppose to save my settings ??
