can you ctl alt + to switch to the next resolution? It would still be a
bug but it sounds like Gnome is trying to switch resolutions and
hanging. Also your description of the sony behavior implies that the
resolution was ok there is that correct?
You might try looking at the first virtual terminal before logging in.
ctrl alt F1 should let you see the messages that X spits out as gdm is
launched. Another thing I would try is to boot to a command line and
then startx so you can see these messages and bypass gdm altogether, I
think.
