A strange thing happened on my 5.2 box when I went from runlevel 3 to 1 and
later back to 3. The virtual console (tty1) I used to switch runlevels is
now echoing '^M' to the screen when I hit the enter key, making it
impossible to login. The other virtual terminals are working fine, but I'm
wondering what's causing this and if there's a solution. I've tried
killing the mingetty process for tty1 and commenting tty1 out of
/etc/inittab, telling init to re-read inittab, uncommenting tty1 and
re-reading inittab again, all to no avail.

Anyone know what's causing this and if there's a solution or work around?
