I use a 486SX 25MZ with 40MB of RAM as a firewall for a home based DSL
network with 4 other computers. Use RH 6.0 with IP Chains/Masq and a
strong firewall script. Has a 500MB HD with roughly 130MB free. Linux
only on the HD, no other OS. There is a 64MB swap file. Pretty much a
standard-issue installation. Boots to Level 3/text only since no need
for graphics on the machine.
Works just fine. The firewall machine is on continuously, 24/7.
However, roughly every 2 weeks, the firewall PC locks up and I get an
"out of memory" error. You can escape back to the prompt, but the
machine then won't take a "shutdown -r(or h) -now" command. A reset or
power recycle is the only option.
Any ideas what is going on? Should I be doing some routine
administrative maintenance once a week like dumping or resetting a
file? Is there a setting that may be incorrect?
It's not a major issue as it only takes a few minutes to reboot the
firewall PC, but it is a minor annoyance.
Thanks!
