I've always used something along the following lines combined with cron.

find foo | cpio [with appropriate options] > tapedevice

not just for my linux box but also whenever I've had to set-up backup scipts for my
client's Oracle databases. It's simple, free and most of all realiable. If you want
a sample backup script email me at work and I'll dig one out for you.

Subject: Backup program?

Hi all,
I'm trying to sort out backing up my RH box to a DLT drive. What program
should I use? I vaguely remember seeing something on a SCO box with a nice
X interface etc. The backup need not be too fancy, just a full backup 5
nights a week with eject at the end and also some kind of notification
process (email) if it all goes horribly wrong. It has to be able also to
restore selective files etc.

Thanks in advance,

Toby.
