Interesting command, does anyone know what the SunOS equiv' is, I've had a
look on our Sun machine and can't see it...

Maybe you could use "nmap" to do this? I usually something like

nmap -sP x.y.z.1-254

to find out which IPs are in use/which hosts are up.
