If it is doing reverse lookups, how do I stop it? Or if it should do reverse lookups, what do I need to do on the client end?

Is it the actual connection that takes time, or the login as
anonymous? If its the actual connection, your machine is trying to do
reverse lookups on the IPs connecting to it, and probably not getting
a response.
